Step 1 · Request your export
On the website
- Click your avatar (bottom-left).
- Open Profile Settings.
- Go to Account.
- Choose Manage Account & Data.
- Click Export Data.
In the mobile app
- Open your profile.
- Tap the settings icon (top-right).
- Open Legal & Privacy.
- Tap Export Data.
What happens next
- 📧 A download link is emailed to your sign-up address.
- ⏳ Officially 3–4 weeks; sometimes it arrives within hours.
- ⚠️ The link is valid for 7 days only — download promptly.
- 🔎 Not there? Check spam / junk.
- 💡 Tip: scroll important chats to the top first; the export may only include loaded messages.

FAQ
How long does the Character.AI export take?
Officially 3–4 weeks, but many people receive the email within hours or a day. It is sent to the email address you signed up with. Check your spam/junk folder.
My download link expired. What do I do?
The link only works for 7 days. Request a new export from the same Export Data screen and download the file as soon as the email arrives.
How do I open the JSON file?
You don't need to. Drop the whole .zip (or any .json from inside it) into the viewer above and your chats appear as readable chat bubbles. You can also open JSON in any text editor, but it is hard to read.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Files are read by JavaScript in your own browser. Nothing is sent to any server, there is no analytics, and the page works offline once loaded.
Why are some messages missing?
Community reports suggest the export may only contain messages the app had loaded. Scrolling important chats to the very top before requesting the export may help.
Can I save my chats as text?
Yes. Download a single conversation, or all of them, as plain text (.txt) or Markdown (.md).
My file says it doesn't look like a Character.ai export.
Make sure you selected the .zip from the export email or a .json file from inside it. The export format is not officially documented, so if your file is genuine but not recognised, the format may have changed.
